The Griffith Observatory sits on a hill overlooking all of Los Angeles. I'd been wanting to check it out for quite a while and finally had the opportunity last week. Before actually going into the Observatory we hiked up the Mount Hollywood trail which starts right behind it. It was an easy hike and took less than an hour each way. If you go, I would recommend not starting in the middle of the afternoon as we did because there isn't much tree coverage on the trail so it was HOT. We took in the view at the top, and could even see Catalina Island despite the haze. They say on a clear day the view is breathtaking, but I feel like these "clear days" people talk about here are just a myth. :)
After hiking back down, we had a little picnic, then browsed through the Observatory, briefly checking out the solar and lunar exhibits, while waiting for the sun to set.
It also happened to be a "Public Star Party" night where the local astronomers bring their telescopes for the public to use, but we didn't stay because the heat of the hike wore us out and we didn't want to wait for it to be dark enough to see the stars. It's a monthly event so I'm sure I'll check it out some other time.
